Dr. Angela Broeker & Dr. Leigh Ann Garner
“Same Planet, Similar Worlds!”
Location: James B. Woulfe Alumni Hall, Anderson Student Center
Come explore how musical skills and conceptual understandings can be nurtured in students in two different Kodaly-inspired settings. Leigh Ann Garner and Angela Broeker will present parallel lessons on the same skill/concept set first in a general music classroom and then in a children’s choral rehearsal.
Dr. Broeker’s Biography: Angela Broeker is Director of Choral Activities at the University of St. Thomas where she conducts the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir and teaches choral courses for students pursing the Master of Arts in Music Education degree with a choral concentration. Since arriving at UST in 1999, Dr. Broeker’s choirs have performed at the National ACDA convention in 2011, North Central Regional ACDA convention in 2008, MN Collegiate Choral Festival in 2009, ACDA-MN in 2004, and MMEA conventions in 2007 and 2001. In addition to her university responsibilities, Dr. Broeker presents for national, regional, and state conventions of ACDA, MENC, OAKE, and AOSA. She serves as guest conductor for numerous honors choirs including all-state choirs in 15 states, national OAKE honor choirs, and regional ACDA honor choirs. The book she coauthored with Mary Goetze and Ruth Boshkoff, Educating Young Singers, was published in October, 2009. She lives in St. Paul with her dog and her husband-composer, Jay.
Dr. Garner’s Biography: Dr. Leigh Ann Garner teaches elementary classroom music at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Hastings, MN. In addition, she is the Director of the Kodály Institute at the University of St. Thomas, where she teaches Levels I and II pedagogy. Garner also taught on the Kodály faculty at Wichita State University. She is the co-author of Music and Movement, a music curriculum for children ages 1-5, and is a contributing author for MacMillan McGraw/Hill music textbook series. Dr. Garner served on the board of the Organization of American Kodály Educators from 2004-2012. She holds an Ed. D. from the University of St. Thomas, an M.A. in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas, and a B.A. in Vocal Music Education from St. Olaf College

Dr. Brent Gault
“Engaged Listening: Active Musical Listening Experiences in Kodály -inspired Classrooms”
Location: James B. Woulfe Alumni Hall, Anderson Student Center
This workshop will focus on using a variety of musical skills including singing,
moving, and creating during music listening lessons as a way to promote deeper connections during listening. Attendees will participate in sample experiences designed to illustrate possible ways to engage students actively during the music listening process.
