African-American Songs and Singing Games

Come perform music from this rich tradition and discover how it can be used in your classroom. Many of the singing games will be from the repertoire of Bessie Jones, folk singer from the Georgia Sea Islands. You will see how this music reflects the African music aesthetic yet also borrows from and incorporates elements from the Anglo tradition.
Ivy Rawlins has a diploma from the Kodaly Musical Training Institute. She
has taught vocal music in the public schools of Washington, D.C., Boston,
Hartford, and Baltimore. As a faculty member of the Kodaly Musical
Training Institute, Holy Names College, and the Harrt College of Music
she taught methodology, materials, and solfege, and supervised student
teachers. She is a co-author of the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill basic series
Share the Music and Spotlight on Music. Ivy has given numerous
workshops throughout the United States and has been a clinician in
Australia and Canada. She specializes in American folk music, especially
African American children's songs and singing games.
