Kodály Chapter of Minnesota
Presenter: Kathy Robinson
March 21, 2009
8:30am-1:00pm
Location: McNeely Great Hall
Participants will make a musical and cultural connection with children of the Molehabangwe and Tshwarelela Primary School in Galeshewe, South Africa. We will experience the role and power of music in their lives as we sing their songs, dance their dances, listen to their music and become part of their world. All of the songs will be learned as the children learn them - aurally or via a reading system called Tonic Sol-Fa (solfege for pitches and punctuation marks for duration) introduced into South Africa by British missionaries in the mid-1800s and still used today.
We will also learn a piece in Tonic Solfa which all black South African musicians learn beginning in primary school and explore Mbube (The Lion Sleeps Tonight), one of the most recorded songs in history with over 200 versions found world-wide. Cultural context, translation, notation, use and videotape of each song/dance performed by the children, young adults and adult will be presented. Additional video footage which orients us to this fascinating culture will be shared.
