Kodály Chapter of Minnesota
Middle Eastern Folk Songs in Cultural Context
Presenter: Joan Litman
September 27, 2008
8:30am-1:00pm
Location: McNeely Great Hall
In an interactive workshop exploring well-loved Middle Eastern folksongs, participants will enjoy a brief visit to an Islamic market (souq), a wedding reception in Iran and a secret play date in the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan. The text and context of these songs and others will be illuminated throughout the day in the midst of singing, dancing and dramatic play.
In a day of music making, we will explore the following topics: the adaptation of Kodaly pedagogy to non-sequential musical tasks; engaging strategies for learning and teaching songs in unfamiliar languages, controversial texts, and essential guidelines for working with cultural informants.
